As expected, the 200 block of Fifth Street won’t be ready for the thousands expected to pour into downtown for next weekend’s Defeat of Jesse James Days.
But that isn’t all.
The Riverwalk promenade, the meandering path inviting visitors to stroll along the Cannon, may not be done in time, either.
Interim City Administrator Joel Walinski said Friday that though some concrete will be poured next week on the promenade, he isn’t confident it’ll be open in time for the festival. The festival beer tent will still be in its usual site, the adjacent Water Street parking lot.

Construction on Fifth Street has been delayed, Walinski said, because workers unexpectedly hit bedrock and ran into utility lines they weren’t anticipating. But he hasn’t gotten an explanation as to why the Riverwalk isn’t complete.
It’s possible that penalties could be imposed on the contractor for not completing work before DJJD as its contract spells out, Walinski said.
The 200 block of Fifth Street will be closed to vehicles during DJJD Gravel will be laid and compacted on the street, Walinski said, creating a walkable surface for festival-goers. The Washington Street parking lot will be open during the event.
