Scientists say skeleton's bones from more than one person
Email Print
The skeleton that's resided at the Northfield Historical Society for more than 25 years contains bones from more than one person, scientists announced Thursday.

Dr. James A. Bailey of the Univesity of North Carolina at Wilmington announced the findings of more than one year of investigation at the American Academy of Forensic Sciences Converence in Denver. Several historians, scientists and labs from around the world participated in the investigation.

A variety of tests, including DNA, were used in trying to identify the skeleton, obtained by the historical society from the Stagecoach Museum in Shakopee in the early 1980s. Rumor had always said the skeleton was that of Charlie Pitts, a member of the Jesse James gang defeated in Northfield in 1876, but test results released today generally dismissed that theory because of DNA testing and the age of the bones.

One test also revealed that DNA from at least one of the teeth did not match that of another skeletal bone.
