The rumors I'd heard from middle school students for weeks were true -- no more SNL this school year. The district sent a letter to parents recently announcing the cancellation of remaining Saturday Night Live events at the middle school.
Saturday Night Live provided a social and recreational opportunity for middle school kids every few months or so. Activities usually included swimming, dancing to music and just hanging out with friends. Pizza and drinks were usually available.
The notice is pretty vague as to why the events are no more, indicating that the district faced a challenge in providing a well supervised, positive experience for attendees. Hard to argue with that. It's difficult to throw a large group of 11-14 year-olds together without creating any problems. There was usually at least one story of someone getting accidently injured, or an argument breaking out or a health-related incident.
It's not the school's responsibility to entertain our kids, of course, but I like the idea that we were using our taxpayer-funded facilities outside of regular school hours.
I hope the district discusses and researches options, as noted in the letter, and engages parents in the process. It'd be a shame if the event went away completely. |

How will the middle school supervise "Wednesday Morning Live?"
