Halloween, fairy tales and belly dancing.
It’s an improbable combination, but it’s at the heart of Kate Southwick’s upcoming dance performance.
Southwick, who has taught belly dancing for 15 years in Northfield, will perform the quirky routine at the Northfield Arts Guild Theater stage on Friday night as part of the NAG’s Danse Macabre — a Halloween-themed dance production featuring performers from the arts guild and area dance schools and organizations.
As part of her number, Southwick will lead a group of her students through the routine, which ends with an unexpected dance-off between zombies and the grandmother and the Big Bad Wolf from the fairy tale “Little Red Riding Hood.”
But Southwick is just one of more than 20 acts involving more than 70 dancers who will converge on the stage for the event. To get a glimpse at what you will find at the performance, here’s a preview of three other performances planned for Danse Macabre:
SHARI SETCHELL
DANCING TO: “Stranded in Your Love” by Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings
Setchell, the dance program coordinator for the NAG, managed to convince her husband, Michael Kirby, to join her on stage for a “humorous” duet performance. The piece, Setchell said, is about two people who can’t get away from one another, and combines a pantomime choreography with a dance routine.
To perfect the non-traditional piece, Setchell has been practicing with her husband in a non-traditional place: their basement study.
RAELENE OSTBERG
DANCING TO: “Amazing” by Kanye West
Ostberg, a first-time choreographer, chose a heady topic for her dance. The piece, Ostberg said, focuses on the internal struggle some experience as they move from self-loathing and self-rejection to self-acceptance — all of which is reflected in the movements and style of Ostberg’s contemporary performance.
“I’m doing something I’ve wanted to my entire life, which is put together a solo piece,” Ostberg said.

MARY HAHN
DANCING TO: “Sweet Transvestite” from “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”
Hahn will be joining a gaggle of dancers and actors onstage to reprise “Sweet Transvestite,” a high-energy musical number from the NAG’s 2008 theater production of Richard O’Brien’s “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” The performance rounds out Danse Macabre and will be accompanied by live music from local rock ‘n’ roll cover band Area 51. After the piece, Area 51 will play for an hour, while audience members and performers mingle during an on-stage dance party.
“It’s going to be a really big closing,” Hahn said. “We hope it will get people on their feet.”
