Jim Pokorney says he didn’t intend to say the News acted unethically. But that’s how I understood his remarks Tuesday night.
During a discussion of an apparent “security breach” at City Hall in which the newspaper ended up with a document the city administrator says he asked staff and council members not to share, Pokorney said we should have given the document back to its rightful owner.
On Wednesday he said that as a good community member the News shouldn’t have published the information that shows the city’s attorney believes that for a variety of reasons the 1980 annexation agreement is no longer valid.
It’s our job to report the news — and that includes important opinions by the city attorney which could permanently alter this city.

Pokorney has no position to say that the NorthfieldNews dhould have given any document back. That is absurd. Are we to think that the city has a right to censor what news or information is published?
More newspapers need to be involved more fully in the dissemination of news and items of interest like the NorthfieldNews.
If it was not a legal discussion based on legal action or other items not subject to open meeting law or classified as private then that information is public and subject to a data practices request anyways.
I think the city council and staff need a refresher on state law and that that government should be transparent and accountable and the NorthfieldNews helps fulfill that duty.
