Festivities will mark St. Patrick’s Day in town

NORTHFIELD — Residents will be rolling in the green Saturday at Northfield’s 10th annual St. Patrick’s Celebration. The all-ages event includes a parade and costume contests and will culminate with a get-together at the Contented Cow.

Festivities begin with a pre-parade luncheon at Froggy Bottom’s and a get-together in the Econofoods parking lot before the parade up Division Street, which starts at 2 p.m. Leading the parade will be a piper from St. Paul, Northfield resident Jim Bohnhoff as St. Patrick and this year’s grand marshal, Emily Monaghan.

Bohnhoff said to expect creative costumes, including an appearance by Dreamworks characters Shrek and Fiona, and “four-legged friends” dressed for this year’s new addition to the costume contest: the Puppy Parade.

“We’ve had all sorts of varieties of costumes along the way,” Bohnhoff said. “It’s a fun thing for the town.”

Parade-goers can gather at the Contented Cow after the parade for further celebration and to enjoy or perform Irish songs, poetry and stories.

“It’s always amazing how many people just show up,” Bohnhoff said. “It’s always fun.”

Bohnhoff, Kevin O’Connell and Jim Pokorney started the St. Patrick’s celebration a decade ago on a whim two-weeks before St. Patrick’s day.

Even with such a short time frame, the first parade had over 100 people attend, and “that’s why we kept going,” Bohnhoff said.

“There’s just a wide variety of people, Irish folk and others, who like to come out and enjoy the comraderie.”
